Kathmandu : Nepal won first international title in 23 years, beating nine-man Bahrain U-23 team 3-0 in the final of Bangabandhu Gold Cup 2016 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka on Friday. back in 1993 when they defeated India 4-3 in penalties after a 2-2 stalemate during the South Asian Games final in Dhaka.

Nepal took an early lead in the 5th minute with score from Bimal. Bishal doubled the advantage in 87th minute. Nawayug Shrestha, who scored hat-trick in the semifinals against Maldives, added the third goal in the first minute of the added five-minute stoppage time. were the only team to be unbeaten in the tournament. Three players of Bahrain were shown yellow cards while a Nepali player was also cautioned.
Nawayug Shrestha ended the tournament as the highest goal scorer with four goals to his name. Shrestha has been declared the man of tournament, while Bimal Gharti Magar was declared the man of the final match.
Champions Nepali team were provided with wining prize of USD 50,000 (Nepali 50 Lakhs) along with a trophy and medal for the squad and staffs. Runner up Bahrain u-23 were provided with a winning amount of USD 25,000 along with a trophy and medal for each players.
The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) announced that it would award Rs 500,000 cash reward to each member of the national football team that lifted the Bangabandhu Gold Cup trophy on Friday.
